You will use soda without going into too much scientific detail here when adding an acid to the batter such as lemon, buttermilk, etc. Baking soda is a lot more effective than baking powder, so don't seek to subdue them fairly.

If the recipe requires cake flour and you don't have any, you can make a pinch of your own. Just take out two tablespoons of flour for every cup of cake flour you need, and add two tablespoons of cornstarch. Mix well.
